Ryan is the WeWorkHard apprentice. Recently one of his and Kieran’s friends had a crash and was killed. He was only 21. Clearly, he’s suffering grief and bereavement? WeWorkHard recruits from a small area so everyone knows everyone else and it’s affected not just Ryan and Kieran but the whole team in some way. Ryan is getting angry with everyone. He won’t talk about his friend and if anyone mentions it he clams up. He’s been so promising and you were hoping to keep him on after his apprenticeship ends, but it seems like he is just on self-destruct. He’s out most nights drinking and turning up for work late. Everyone had hoped he would be able to learn to drive and start going out to do jobs on other sites for you but he’s flatly refused to get behind the wheel of a car.
Firstly recognising the signs of grief or bereavement that Ryan is experiencing is typical.
We all react to grief in different ways but experiencing death in someone so young can provoke extreme reactions.
Giving Ryan, support and giving him time to come to terms with this situation is important. Ryan needs to come to terms with his grief and you need to take steps to let this happen.
